(sda)

Notes on the Edipresse Group's - Results for Financial Year 2004
Strong increase in turnover of 7.1% owing to the incorporation of new business activities and an extension of the consolidation scope. Decline in turnover in Switzerland (-4.7%). Growth at the international level (+26.8%). Group turnover increased by 0.5% at constant consolidation scope.
Edipresse is resolutely continuing its expansion by making new acquisitions and increasing its investment in the creation of new publications. The effect of this growth policy, which is driven by medium-term potential, is to dilute short-term profitability.
CHF 5 million increase in investment in the launch of new products, which exceeded CHF 15 million.
The Group has initiated various cost-saving programs, connected mainly with rationalisation of its industrial activities. For this purpose an amount of CHF 20.5 million has been allocated to restructuring provisions.
Operating profit before launch expenses (EBITDAL), the main indicator of the Group’s earnings capacity, increased by 8.7% to CHF 103 million, despite the weakness of the advertising market. In contrast, Net Group Profit decreased by CHF 19.7 million to CHF - 7.9 million. This decrease is attributable mainly to the large scale of strategic investments and to the level of restructuring measures for which provisions were made.
Management strengthened. Tibère Adler becomes Group Chief Executive. Pierre Lamunière steps down from operational management, but retains his full-time position as Chairman of the Board and Executive Director.
The investments made, along with all the restructuring measures that have been implemented, should produce a clear-cut improvement in profitability in 2005 and 2006. The trend in the advertising market and increases in the price of paper must be watched carefully, however.
The Group will continue a sustained programme of new launches in 2005 and hopes to complete several medium-sized acquisitions.
Edipresse is a multilingual and multicultural international Publishing house. It operates in the areas of newspaper and magazine publishing, printing and multimedia. The Edipresse Group is active in Switzerland, where the company is registered, Spain, Portugal, Mexico, Russia, Ukraine, Romania, Greece and several countries in Asia. It publishes over 150 titles and has more than 3,500 employees, of whom about 1,700 are based in Switzerland. It strives to ensure that its expansion takes place in a controlled and coherent fashion. Its strategy is fundamentally based on the written word and on three simple principles.
The first of these is to concentrate resources, both human and financial, on the activities and the countries where the company can achieve significant market share.
The second principle expresses the corporate desire to publish quality titles, which clearly meet the needs of both readers and advertisers.
The third principle concerns the special responsibilities involved in the publishing profession.
